Some things last week:
The kids are on spring break this week, so over the weekend, we drove east to Sequoia National Park. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the best time to go, weather-wise, as there was a storm coming! It was a vacation rental so we couldn’t get a refund, we decided to just brave it and hopefully still get a nice holiday.
We stayed at Three Rivers, a small town known as the gateway to national park. The house we stayed at was about 15 minutes drive to the park entrance. The weather was supposed to turn bad on Friday afternoon, with a winter storm warning throughout the area. So we crossed our fingers, and left the house early, getting to the park before 8 am. Luckily the roads were plowed and while we were required to carry chains, we didn’t have to use them at all. Of course we had to see the General Sherman Tree, not the tallest or the widest, but the tree with the most volume (?). And oh, it’s just about 2,500 years old or thereabouts. The trails were icy and since my mum was traveling with us, we had brought along some hiking poles and I had her wear my snow boots.
The roads in Sequoia are very windy with many switchbacks, so we were just really glad we didn’t have to drive on snowy roads. But the snow did make for very beautiful scenery.

Eating and Drinking:
On the way back home, we stopped by to pick up sushi from a Japanese supermarket. At the same strip mall, there’s a famous Chinese bakery called Pineapple King. This branch opened late last year and the queues have been horrendous (there’s only one other branch, in SF). So when we drove past and finally saw just a handful of people outside, we knew we had to grab some to try. The buns have this nice crackling pastry topping and some of them have fillings inside. I liked the pandan butter (above) and the ube one. The kids really like the custard puffs.
Cooking:
We picked up some Dungeness crab at Costco. So we will have that for dinner, with asparagus and rice.

It looks like your bravery was rewarded with a scenic holiday! Lovely pictures.

I think your cakes look even better than Pineapple King. But I hope they were as good as yours.
California has an amazing variety of different landscapes. It looks nice in the storm, although it probably wasn’t as fun for you.
